I've begun volunteering at 826 CHI, a non-profit that offers writing support—creative and expository—for students ages 6 to 18.
The center is also home to The Boring Store. Inside you won't find any cough silencers, waterproof surveillance notebooks, or underwater walkie talkies. And this photo of a suede harness for your carrier pigeon is completely fictive.
What has been so very nonboring is my time spent reading to and being read to by kids. It's so great to be part of kids' struggles to comprehend text. And good to be part of a worthy fight.
Illiteracy, put 'em up.
