perambulation

I visited the workshop of a man who rehabs prostheses, stripping off the feet and legs and then shipping them to Guatemala. Eric and his partner work as the NGO Range of Motion, refitting the prostheses to rural Guatemalans who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford them.

Many of the feet that come with the prostheses are too large to use in Guatemala, where the average adult foot size is smaller. Pictured here is one large foot slated for the trash.

Many of the prostheses Eric receives have never been used. It takes a specific vim to face the challenge of actually walking around in the world with one of these devices on.

[You can hear about Range of Motion on WBEZ's Worldview show (http://www.wbez.org/Program_WV_Archive.aspx). Listen to the show from 2/22/07. The ROM segment begins at 24:16.]

And then, you know, there's the Tarantino-Rodriguez vision of what's possible.
