A friend of mine is training to be a tour guide with Wendella this summer. Yesterday, we spent the morning and early afternoon on the river. H is trying to memorize all the facts and back stories of the buildings, bridges, and other landmarks you see as you cruise the Chicago River and Lake Michigan around Navy Pier.
Our Lake and River Tour was full of high schoolers, who were pretty listless throughout, prefering to listen to their iPods while the guide talked about the Columbian Exposition, the Great Chicago Fire, the various technological innovations and architectural styles that were first expressed in terracotta, steel, stone, and glass in downtown Chicago.
And then, as we waited in the lock, the kids perked up—the whole upper deck went crazy—when we spied two seagulls mating on the pier next to us. The kids got animated and took out their cameras, running to the rail to take pictures.
I'm hoping H can make use of this new insight into What Interests High School Tourists in upcoming tours.
