just the thing

Saturday night's show was wonderful. I took the el to the Vic for Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova performing (with members of the Frames playing cello, viola, and bass) as The Swell Season. I'd been waiting to see Once, the movie for which their songs were written, with a friend and so was most likely the only one in the audience who hadn't seen the film. But the music was great (and familiar from all the play it's gotten in cars, cafés, friends' homes).

Also of note was the opener, The Blue Ribbon Glee Club. They're a raucous group that used percussion instruments, percussive mouth noise, and mad harmonies to cover Fugazi, The Pixies, and Wreckless Eric. The picture quality is terrible, but you can see them performing Where is My Mind here.
