you know, for kids

My visit to the Newberry Library's exhibit, Artifacts of Childhood: 700 Years of Children's Books, coincided with the taping of Eight Forty-Eight's audio profile of the same. So I slipped in with the WBEZ production crew, listening to the curator talk about his favorite pieces.

The exhibit comprises many treasures, but one of my favorites was the strange book of manners, Why Be A Goop?

An excerpt:
ADOLPHUS ELFINSTONE
Playing With Matches
Adolphus Elfinstone, of Nachez,
Thought it was fun to play with matches
Until the little Goop had learned
It hurt a lot when he got burned!
A little fire is queer and curious;
But soon it grows quite big and furious.
